The purpose of the skills programme is to build the capacity of a person to work function as a Basic First aid Provider. 

Basic first aid providers respond to emergency situations to provide efficient and immediate basic medical care to ill and injured persons during emergencies. They use a limited range of equipment and operate within common and uncommon situations providing a basic first aid care service that falls within a strictly regulated scope of work as defined by various regulatory requirements. 

Incumbents are also expected to continually remain updated on approved new practices and techniques. 

A Mines Rescue Services Worker minimises loss of life and assets by performing rescue and recovery services and managing fires underground. 

Intermediate level first aid skills programme will improve the quality of emergency care provided to patients in situations where it is required. It will equip first aid responders with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively to a range of medical, trauma, and environmental emergencies.  

The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993 mandates employers to provide first aid training to their employees to acquire the necessary skills and equipment to respond to emergencies in the workplace. The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to provide first aid training to employees, where there are more than five employees present at a workplace or where the workplace is considered hazardous. 

Intermediate first aid is intended for workers in industries where the risk of accidents or medical emergencies is higher, such as construction, manufacturing, mining, healthcare, sports and hospitality. The programme enables workers to respond to emergencies effectively, prevent further harm and provide initial care until advanced medical care arrives.

The purpose of the skills programme is to capacitate employees to execute the duties of Advanced Emergency First Aid Responder.

An Advanced Emergency First Aid Responder is a risk-based first aid provider who plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals in the workplace. They are trained to assess potential risks and hazards, develop effective emergency response plans, and provide immediate 
medical care in the event of an accident or injury. By identifying and addressing specific risks, these providers help minimise the impact of incidents, protect lives, and promote a safe working environment for all employees.

The Occupational Health and Safety Representative: Serve as a link between employees and management regarding safety and health aspects in the workplace, they  monitor and inspect the workplace, record and investigate incidents and ensure that the Occupational Health and safety needs of employees are prioritised and dealt with.
